The Studio

A quiet practice, made by hand in Lisbon.

Obscura is the working name of Elena Vasari, a photographer and master printer working exclusively in monochrome since 2001.

Portrait of Ismael Morelos in the studio

Each print begins as a single frame — and ends only when it is inspected, signed, and released into the world.

01 — Capture

Working with medium-format film and long exposures, the studio favours conditions most photographers avoid: fog, blue hour, overcast skies. The negative is the first witness.

02 — Print

Every plate is developed in-house on cotton or baryta papers, hand-inspected under natural light, and signed with the edition number in graphite on the recto.

03 — Release

Editions are strictly limited. Once the last print of an edition is sold, the file is retired and the plate is never reissued.

04 — Deliver

Works ship worldwide in bespoke conservation-grade packaging, accompanied by a printed and stamped Certificate of Authenticity.
